To help protect you from fraud, Butterfield has implemented stringent monitoring and anti-fraud strategies related to overseas Credit and Debit Card use. To avoid any interruption in service whilst travelling overseas, please advise us on your travel plans in advance by contacting us through the secure mailbox in Butterfield Online or call us on +1 (441) 295 1111.

Making payments to your account, is easy:

• Butterfield Online Banking
• Auto-Pay (i.e., option to have the full balance or minimum payment automatically taken from an account specified by you on the payment due date)
• Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at any Butterfield Banking Centre in Bermuda

Credit Card Payment Options – BMD or USD

Please indicate on your application whether you wish to pay your account in Bermuda Dollars or US dollars. If you elect to make your credit card payment in Bermuda Dollars, we automatically charge your account with applicable Foreign Currency Purchase Tax (FCPT) and Foreign Exchange (FX). Bermuda Dollar transactions are not subject to FCPT or FX. If you make your credit card payment in US Dollars, FCPT and FX charges do not apply.

A US cross-border fee will be applied on all transactions completed outside of Bermuda, including those made in the US. Butterfield is absorbing a part of this fee, but a portion will be added to your charges for US transactions. For example, a transaction of $100.00 done in the US will attract a “US cross border fee - $0.60” and be shown as a separate line item. You may review the Schedule of Charges to find the US cross-border fee specific to your card. 

• Note that Foreign Currency Purchase Tax (FCPT) and/or Foreign Exchange (FX) charges will be applied to Bermuda Dollar payments on non-Bermuda Dollar purchases.

• Where services are provided by organisations other than Butterfield, the Bank shall have no responsibility or liability for them, or for their mention on this page, or for their continuance.

• Restrictions on Card Processing Due to travel and trade sanctions and economic embargoes imposed by the United States and the European Union in certain countries Butterfield is unable to be involved in the processing of transactions originating in those countries. Butterfield must comply with international banking regulations that preclude us from facilitating payments to or accepting business from persons or businesses in some countries. As a result, you cannot use your Butterfield card(s) for purchases or cash advances in those locations. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. The countries from which Butterfield is unable to process transactions are Afghanistan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, Eritrea, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti*, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Myanmar (Burma), North Korea, Serbia, Somalia, Sudan (South and North), Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine, Venezuela*, Yemen and Zimbabwe*.

Butterfield Cardholders enjoy enhanced security features of Chip and PIN technology as well as the convenience of contactless/Tap & Go™ technology. Making a purchase with your Debit or Credit card is even more secure when making a payment using a Chip-enabled terminal and choosing to pay using your PIN. And for purchases of US$150 and below, making purchases are faster and easier by simply tapping your card over the contactless reader to make a purchase.

Our Chip and PIN Cards will continue to support magnetic stripe-based transactions at merchants who are not equipped to process Chip-based transactions.

With the Butterfield Card Alerts app, you can:

• View all card transactions
• Receive alerts on transactions
• Set up your alert preferences
• Set spend limits
• Accept/deny international transactions
• Monitor supplementary (shared) cardholders
• Activate/deactivate your card if it is lost or stolen.

A card alert is a push notification that is triggered based on the criteria that you select in the Butterfield Card Alerts App.

You have the autonomy to choose the value or type of transaction of which you wish to receive alerts. This can be modified any time.

Under Alert Preferences, you may set alerts based on:

• Locations all in-store transactions will generate an alert if the merchant location and device do not match.
• Regions all in-store transactions will generate an alert if the location is outside selected regions.
• International all International in-store transactions will generate an alert.
• Merchant and transaction all transactions will generate an alert dependent on merchant type and transaction type selected.
• Spend Limit all transactions will generate an alert based on if the purchase amount exceeds the stated transaction or monthly spend limits.

You should proceed to activate the blocks on your Control Preferences and contact the Call Centre for your location so that the charge back process can be initiated and a new card issued.

Under the Control Preferences, you may set controls based on:

• Locations allow in-store transactions to be denied if merchant location and device does not match.
• Regions allow in-store transactions to be denied if merchant location is outside the selected region.
• International allow international in-store transactions to be denied that are outside of your selected countries.
• Merchant and transaction allow transactions to be denied based on merchant type and transaction type.
• Spend Limit allow transactions to be denied based on if the purchase amount exceeds the stated transaction or monthly spend limits

Yes. All cards linked to your Butterfield Card Alerts App will trigger alerts. Also, supplementary cardholder can also receive alerts if app is downloaded and set up on their mobile phone.
