Reporting to the Group Head of Compliance and Operational Risk, this position is responsible for designing and coordinating the risk identification, scoring, risk appetite, and reporting processes across the relevant programs in the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework. This position is also responsible for leading the interpretation, implementation, measurement, and communication of Operational Risk Management policies, processes and initiatives in addition to the risk and control self-assessment (‘RCSA’) program.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining ERM framework including risk policies, metrics, reporting and monitoring at group and jurisdictional levels, in accordance with the Statement of Risk Appetite and the Group’s strategic goals and objectives.
- Leading the development and evolution of a Risk and Control Self-Assessment framework. programme within the Enterprise Risk Management framework and the compliance monitoring programme.
- Leading the Group’s regulatory relations program, developing clear and concise internal and external regulatory risk communications, executing an effective regulatory submissions regime and managing regulatory exams.
- Aligning Risk Management policies, processes and initiatives with Group business strategy and corporate culture and ensuring they meet legislative requirements and market standards.
- Formulating Risk Management policies in collaboration with senior management.
- Leading operational risk programmes including business continuity and ensuring teams maintain the required knowledge and skills.
- Identifying, measuring, monitoring and reporting the level of the firm’s operational risks in addition to mitigation efforts.
- Maintaining operational control process across the Group that will manage/mitigate operational risk.
- Ensuring that operational losses are tracked and managed across the Group and ensure consistency in root cause analysis, reporting and presentation.
- Leading the Group’s data privacy program and activities in relation to data protection regulations and applicable requirements.
- Staying up-to-date with internal standards and business goals.
- Informing, educating, and training employees on matters that are associated with leading industry practices.
- Fostering a culture of excellence within the teams, identifying goals, and setting performance standards.
- Driving continuous improvement in the quality and quantity of teams work output.
Your qualifications and skills include:
- University degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting or equivalent.
- Minimum of 15 years’ proven progressive banking experience of which 10 must be at a senior level in Compliance, Audit or Risk Management.
- Proven experience in risk management techniques, including RCSA programs.
- The successful candidate will have risk management experience at banking institutions, strong written and verbal communication skills and work well in a team environment across a range of stakeholders.
- Proven Project and Team Management skills.

Operational Risk works across the Group using risk assessments to identify and measure the risks the Bank incurs in the delivery of its products and services and the effectiveness of the controls we use to manage those risks. The team reports on the identified risks and remedial actions. The team is also responsible for Butterfield’s business continuity planning and ensures that the business is up and running as quickly as possible after an event.
