National Heroes Day Banking Hours

Butterfield will be closed on Monday, 13 November, for the Remembrance Day public holiday. Our Banking Centres will reopen on Tuesday, 14 November, at 9 a.m. To access your accounts, please use Butterfield Online and our ATM network.

Old Sterling Banknotes – removed from circulation on 1 October 2022.

Please be advised that as of Saturday, 1 October 2022, Butterfield will not accept old paper sterling notes for banking deposits or transactions as they will no longer be legal tender. The official last day of use is Friday, 30 September 2022.

Butterfield clients are encouraged to deposit old notes or swap them out for the new polymer ones at any Butterfield Banking Centre before Saturday, 1 October 2022. From this date, only polymer sterling banknotes will be accepted.

We will be closed on Monday, 23 January 2023 for National Heroes Day. Our Midtown Plaza Banking Centre will be this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and otherwise all Banking Centres will reopen on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, with normal operating hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. You can continue to access your accounts during the public holiday by using our Butterfield Online, ATM and mobile banking devices.

Holiday Banking Hours:

Butterfield will be closed from 2 p.m. on Friday 23 December and will reopen 9 a.m. Wednesday 28 December, 2022.

We will close again from 4 p.m. on Friday 30 December, 2022 and will reopen 9 a.m. Tuesday 3 January, 2023.

Update on Saturday Banking: Saturday Banking will be temporarily suspended as we allow time for annual training and infrastructure investment initiatives. To access your accounts, please use our Butterfield Online, ATM and mobile banking services. Saturday Banking hours will resume as normal on March 4th.

Update on Saturday Banking: We are pleased to announce the return of Saturday Banking. Our Front Street Banking Centre will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every Saturday for you to take care of your personal banking needs.

Hurricane Lee Advisory: Please be advised that our offices and Banking Centres in Bermuda will be open for business from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. today.

The ATMs at Collector’s Hill, Modern Mart, Somerset MarketPlace and Somerset Banking Centre are back in service and Saturday banking will be available tomorrow at Front Street from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

We are pleased to report the issue with debit card settlements has been fixed for the vast majority of accounts impacted, and we are working to correct the few outstanding. If you still see an issue with your account and you require access to blocked funds immediately, please contact the call centre.

Please be advised that our Banking Centres will be closing at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 6 October. Butterfield Online will also be unavailable this weekend from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 6 October until Monday, 9 October at 9:00 a.m. as part of a scheduled systems update.

Andrew Henton

Mr. Henton joined the Board as an Independent Director in July 2025. He continues to serve as a member of the Board and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of Butterfield’s subsidiary banking business in the Channel Islands having joined in 2016. Between 2002 and 2011, Mr. Henton worked at Close Brothers Group plc and was latterly Head of Offshore Businesses. During this time he led the creation of Close Private Bank, which provided asset management, banking, and administration services to high net worth and institutional clients. Following the sale of Close Brothers’ offshore division in 2011, Mr. Henton has acted as a Director on the boards of a number of funds, investment managers and other financial services companies. Previously, he spent four years working in HSBC’s Corporate Finance division and three years as a Fund Manager with Baring Private Equity Partners. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds a Master’s degree in Modern History from St John’s College, Oxford.

Stephen E. Cummings

Stephen Cummings joined the Board in July 2024. Mr. Cummings is currently the Secretary of Finance for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He had a long and successful career in banking and finance, most recently serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) in the Americas. Prior to his role at MUFG, he was the Chairman of UBS’s Investment Banking division in the Americas, was Global Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Wachovia Bank, and served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co. Mr. Cummings has an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colby College.

Ingrid Pierce

Ingrid Pierce joined the Board in December 2022. She is the Global Managing Partner of Walkers, a leading international law firm that provides legal, corporate, fiduciary and compliance services to global corporations, financial institutions, capital markets participants and investment fund managers. Recognised as one of the world's leading investment funds lawyers, she acts for major institutions, asset managers, insurers, reinsurers, trustees and other fiduciaries. Ms. Pierce was made a partner of Walkers in 2008 having joined the firm in 2002. Prior to Walkers, Ms. Pierce spent nearly a decade working as a Barrister in London in the commercial chancery field. Ms. Pierce serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Lex Mundi, the world's leading network of independent law firms, and is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). She holds a Bachelors degree from University College London (UCL), a certificate in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors and a certificate in Bank Risk Management from the Chartered Institute of Bankers. She was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales (1992) (not practising), the Cayman Islands (2002) and the British Virgin Islands (2002).

John R. Wright

John Wright joined the Board in 2002. Mr. Wright retired as chief executive of Clydesdale & Yorkshire Banks in 2001. Mr. Wright’s career in commercial banking spans over 43 years and includes assignments in the UK, India, Sri Lanka, West Africa, Canada, Hong Kong and the United States. He is a visiting Professor at Heriot-Watt University Business School and a past President of the Irish Institute of Bankers and a past Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland. Mr. Wright serves on the Boards of Directors of several private UK and overseas companies, including XMI International, Drivewise Trust and First Carbon International. Mr. Wright was educated at Daniel Stewart's College Edinburgh.

Michael Schrum

Mr. Schrum is the President and Group Chief Financial Officer, a position he has held since September 2025. He joined the Board of Directors in 2020 and previously served as Group Chief Financial Officer from 2015, and the President and Group Chief Risk Officer from 2022. He was previously Chief Financial Officer at HSBC Bank Bermuda. Mr. Schrum has more than 25 years of financial services experience in London, New York and Bermuda, mainly in banking, insurance and tax. He joined HSBC in Bermuda in 2001 and held progressively more senior positions within the bank’s Commercial Banking, Strategy, and Finance divisions. He is a CFA Charterholder (CFA Institute) and a Fellow Chartered Accountant (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). Mr. Schrum holds a Master’s (University of London) and Bachelor’s (Southern Denmark Business School) degree in Economics.

Jana Schreuder

Jana Schreuder joined the Board in August 2020. She is an experienced executive who most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Northern Trust Corporation, a role from which she retired in 2018. Ms. Schreuder joined Northern Trust in 1980 and during her tenure held multiple roles as a member of the executive management team, including: the President of Wealth Management from 2011 through 2014; President of Operations & Technology from 2007 through 2010; and Chief Risk Officer from 2005 through 2006. Ms. Schreuder currently serves as a Director and Chair of the Compensation Committee of Blucora, Inc. Since 2008, Ms. Schreuder has served as a Director and Chair of the Compensation Committee for Entrust Datacard Group. From 2016 to 2018, Ms. Schreuder was a member of the Board of Directors of LifePoint Health. Ms. Schreuder received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Southern Methodist University and a Master’s degree in finance and marketing management from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Ms. Schreuder is a member of the Governance and Membership Committee and New York Chapter of Women Corporate Directors and the National Association of Corporate Directors from which she has received the NACD Directorship Certification.

Mark Lynch

Mr. Lynch joined the Board in October 2019. He is a respected investment manager and analyst with a specialisation in financial services. On 30 June 2019, he withdrew as a partner of Boston-based Wellington, where he had served as the firm’s senior financial services analyst since 1994 and a partner since 1996. He was also a portfolio manager of mutual funds, hedge funds, and institutional portfolios over that period. Prior to joining Wellington, Mr. Lynch was a US regional bank analyst with Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns. Mr. Lynch is also a director of Dads' Resource Center in State College, Pennsylvania. He holds a degree in European History from Harvard College.

Alastair Barbour

Alastair Barbour joined the Board in 2012 and was named Lead Independent Director in October of 2021. He is a Chartered Accountant with more than 25 years of experience providing auditing and advisory services to publicly traded companies, primarily in the financial services industry. Mr. Barbour was employed with KPMG from 1978 until his retirement in 2011. During his time there, he held various positions both locally and overseas. In 1985, he was named Partner at KPMG (Bermuda). Mr. Barbour's most recent position was head of KPMG's Financial Services Group in Scotland. Currently, Mr. Barbour serves on the Boards of Directors and chairs the Audit Committees of several listed and private companies, including RSA Insurance Group plc, Liontrust Asset Management plc, and Phoenix Group Holdings plc. Mr. Barbour trained with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in London and holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.

Michael Collins

Michael Collins is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Butterfield Group, also joining the Board in 2015 upon being named CEO. He was named Chairman in July of 2017. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Collins was Senior Executive Vice President with responsibility for all of the Bank's client businesses in Bermuda, including Corporate, Private and Retail Banking, as well as the Operations, Custody and Marketing functions in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Mr. Collins has more than 30 years of experience in financial services, having held progressively senior positions at Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in New York and later at Bank of Bermuda and HSBC in Bermuda. Before joining Butterfield in 2009, Mr. Collins was Chief Operating Officer at HSBC Bank Bermuda. Mr. Collins holds a BA in Economics from Brown University.
