Job Summary
The Lending Specialist (Underwriting) reports to the Head of Local Banking & Lending, Jersey. This is a really exciting opportunity to work in a growing organisation, that has the strategic objective of expanding its local banking products in the Jersey.
The core responsibilities are as follows:
- Act as a front office lending specialist for Butterfield Bank, Jersey
- Act as both an internal and external credit advisor
- To review mortgage applications, suggest changes, debate structural situations and deliver a professional credit approval application.
- To assist all Lending Offers in the approvals and conclusion of the facilities they underwrite
- Work with Credit Risk & Credit Ops to ensure credit facilities are within our defined risk strategy and ensure that risk culture is built into all new product design, case submission and portfolio review
- Make recommendations for continuous improvement to the process
- To respond to external enquiries within agreed SLAs (either via email or telephone) & deliver exceptional client service.
- Contribute and present into CI & UK Credit Committee
- To assist in the marketing of CI mortgages, both externally and internally (where applicable).
- Contribute to CI lending targets.
Job Accountabilities
Business Development
- Deliver a robust credit underwriting standard to ensure Butterfield CI meets its lending growth ambitions
- Develop and maintain awareness of local market and competition and foster commercial relationships for the benefit of the organisation
- Utilise financial skills and breadth of market understanding to establish bespoke solutions to address specific property lending requirements within Butterfields risk appetite framework and strategy and resolve more complex needs as required
- To negotiate the best possible terms for credit facilities
- To promote Butterfield generally to both existing and potential clients
Client Service
- To ensure that client perception of Butterfield Group and BBGL remains good at all times
- Present a highly professional image to clients and model appropriate behaviours
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of mortgage products and services provided by BBGL and from competitors. Additionally, retain detailed understanding of external product offerings, services, taxation, investment, wider economic/market activities that impact on client needs
- To keep abreast of trends specifically in the local residential market
Leadership
- Help and motivate fellow Lending Officers and the broader Bank to instil a credit focus and service culture
- Undertake the key role of being the credit structuring expert, across the CI. Be the ‘go-to’ person for all colleagues on how to structure lending opportunities.
- Pro-actively propose client solutions and credit structures, within Butterfield’s lending framework
- Ensure the Group’s and CIUK’s strategic initiatives, values and action programmes are successfully implemented
Management and Administration
- Work flexibly and supportively with peers to share and adopt best practice in relation to credit underwriting
- Ensure full compliance with all corporate standards, policies, processes and procedures and with all external legal, regulatory and voluntary code obligations, thus providing the client with a high quality, professional and compliant service
- Ensure credit process guidelines are followed
- Ensure full compliance with all Group standards, policies and procedures and with all external legal, regulatory and voluntary codes to ensure the client is provided with a high quality, professional and compliant service
- Devise systems and procedures to mitigate risk to the bank whilst safe guarding the client
- Oversee all credit proposals prior to submission to Credit Committee to ensure only sound credit proposals are being considered
- Oversee all new business to the department to ensure business being written meets with the strategic aims of CIUK
- Ensure full compliance with all corporate standards, policies, processes and procedures and with all external legal, regulatory and voluntary code obligations, thus providing the client with a high quality, professional and compliant service
- Support CI Head of Lending in execution of initiatives, risk frameworks and growth of business by actively contributing to management meetings and being accountable and responsible for tasks undertaken
Know-How/Competency Requirements
Key controls
- Ensure that all KYC monitoring requirements are completed on time as appropriate
- Ensure suitable management information is presented to the CI Head of Lending detailing action points completed, being undertaken and to be started
- Ensure that the CIUK Charges Tariff is properly adhered to and that any exceptions are duly recorded and approved
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Good Credit/Lending experience
- Ideally CEMAP qualified or equivalent. If not, be prepared to undertake.
- Excellent administration skills
- Speed, accuracy and reliability
- Excellent communication skills
- Co-operative attitude
